15 july 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau  : A recent Cyclospora outbreak has renewed concerns about foodborne illnesses, with health authorities investigating contaminated fresh produce as the likely source. Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that infects the intestines and causes cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness that can last for weeks if left untreated.

The parasite is commonly linked to contaminated fruits, vegetables, herbs, and untreated water. Unlike many bacteria, Cyclospora requires time outside the human body to become infectious, making person-to-person transmission uncommon.

How Does Cyclospora Spread?

People become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with Cyclospora. Fresh produce such as leafy greens, cilantro, basil, berries, and other raw fruits and vegetables has been associated with previous outbreaks.

Poor sanitation and contaminated irrigation water can contribute to the spread of the parasite.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear 2 to 14 days after infection and may include:

  • Watery diarrhea.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Stomach cramps.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Bloating and gas.
  • Fatigue.
  • Low-grade fever.
  • Weight loss.

Without treatment, symptoms can persist for several weeks or recur over time.

Who Is Most at Risk?

While anyone can become infected, the illness may be more severe in:

  • Older adults.
  • Young children.
  • Pregnant women.
  • People with weakened immune systems.

Prompt medical attention is recommended for individuals with prolonged diarrhea or signs of dehydration.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Cyclospora infection is diagnosed through specialized laboratory testing of stool samples. The standard treatment is a prescribed antibiotic, which is generally effective in clearing the infection and reducing symptoms.

People should avoid self-medicating and consult a healthcare provider if symptoms persist.

How to Reduce the Risk

Health experts recommend:

  • Wash fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
  • Drink safe, treated water.
  • Practice good hand hygiene before preparing food.
  • Avoid consuming food from questionable sources during outbreaks.
  • Follow public health advisories and food recall notices.

Although washing produce helps reduce risk, it may not completely eliminate the parasite if contamination is significant.

Public Health Response

Health authorities continue tracing the source of the outbreak while advising consumers to remain alert for food safety notices. Investigations typically focus on identifying contaminated food products to prevent additional infections.

Experts emphasize that proper food handling, sanitation, and timely medical care remain the best defenses against Cyclospora infection.
