24 February 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Apple Inc. is planning to move some of its Mac Mini production from Asia to the United States later this year, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, signalling a notable shift in the tech giant’s manufacturing strategy. The move will see assembly begin at a Houston facility operated by contract manufacturer Foxconn, as part of Apple’s broader push to expand its U.S. production footprint and diversify its global supply chain.
Under the plans, some Mac Mini desktop computers — currently manufactured mainly in Asia — will be assembled in north Houston beginning later in 2026. The U.S. plant will initially serve primarily domestic demand, while the bulk of Mac Mini production is expected to continue in Asia to meet international customer needs.
This expansion ties into Apple’s previously announced commitment to invest $600 billion in U.S. operations over the next four years, a pledge aimed at strengthening local industry, creating jobs, and reducing exposure to global supply chain disruptions. Officials said the Houston site, which already builds AI servers for the company, will be expanded further and include a new training centre for advanced manufacturing.
The report noted that Apple’s decision reflects continued efforts to reduce reliance on Asian manufacturing hubs amid geopolitical tensions and shifting trade policies. In recent months, the company has diversified its production base beyond China, including increased assembly in countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, and India.
Despite this shift, Apple’s COO Sabih Khan emphasised that most Mac Mini manufacturing will remain in Asia for the time being, and it is not yet clear if any facilities in Asia will scale back production as the Houston line ramps up.
Industry analysts view the move as a symbolic but meaningful step in Apple’s broader strategy to balance its global manufacturing footprint, manage tariff risks, and strengthen its presence in the U.S. market. While the Mac Mini represents a relatively small portion of Apple’s overall output compared with products like iPhones and iPads, expanding domestic assembly still marks an important milestone for U.S. tech manufacturing.
