7 January 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : The Union government has asked social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to submit a detailed report by January 7 regarding the circulation of allegedly obscene and inappropriate content generated by its AI chatbot, Grok. The move comes amid growing concerns over AI-generated responses that were found to be sexually explicit and unsuitable for public consumption.
Officials said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has sought an explanation on the safeguards X has put in place to prevent the generation and spread of such content, especially when accessed by minors. The government has also asked whether Grok complies with India’s IT Rules, 2021, which mandate platforms to ensure due diligence and curb unlawful and harmful content.
Sources indicated that the issue was flagged after users shared screenshots of Grok responding to certain prompts with obscene language and explicit descriptions. The government is examining whether these responses violate Indian laws related to obscenity, child safety, and content moderation.
X has reportedly informed authorities that it is reviewing the matter internally and is working to strengthen content filters and moderation mechanisms for Grok. However, officials have made it clear that failure to submit a satisfactory report within the stipulated deadline could invite further regulatory action.
