24 December 2025 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : A CBI court in Chandigarh has issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation on a bail application filed by suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar in a corruption case. The matter will be heard on December 24.
The CBI arrested Bhullar and his alleged aide Kirshanu Sharda on October 16, 2025, for allegedly seeking bribe from a complainant.
According to the CBI, it received a written complaint dated October 11 from Akash Batta, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh. The complainant alleged that Bhullar, then DIG, Ropar Range, demanded illegal gratification through Sharda for settling an FIR registered in 2023 at the Sirhind police station and for ensuring no further coercive action in connection with his scrap business.
After verification, the CBI laid a trap and arrested both accused along with the alleged bribe money.
SPS Bhullar, counsel for the suspended DIG, submitted that the challan in the case has already been filed and the investigation is complete. He argued that there is no question of the accused influencing witnesses in any manner. The counsel also said the arrest of Bhullar has been challenged on jurisdictional grounds in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The counsel further contended that the reasons for Bhullar’s arrest were not communicated to him or his family members on the day of arrest, rendering the arrest illegal in view of HC judgments.
Earlier, the CBI court had dismissed Bhullar’s default bail plea in a disproportionate assets case. Bhullar had also approached the Supreme Court seeking interim bail and a stay on CBI proceedings, but he failed to get relief. He is currently lodged in the Burail jail under judicial custody.
Summary:
A court has sought a response from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the bail plea filed by suspended Punjab Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Bhullar. The case is currently under investigation, and the court has directed the agency to present its stand before proceeding further. The matter will be taken up for hearing after the CBI submits its reply.
