(18 Aug 2025)(Punjab Khabarnama Bureau): In a significant move to curb rising health risks among fitness enthusiasts, the Punjab government has unveiled a comprehensive health advisory aimed at preventing sudden cardiac deaths in gyms and sports facilities. The initiative, announced on August 7, 2025, marks a landmark step under the state’s flagship campaign, “Swasth Punjab – Surakshit Punjab”, which is designed to foster safer fitness practices across the region .

The advisory, launched by Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh at an event in Ludhiana, is the result of a collaborative study involving Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), and Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) .

Why Now? Rising Cardiac Emergencies

Authorities sounded the alarm over a sharp surge in sudden cardiac arrests among gym-goers and athletes. These episodes have been largely attributed to undiagnosed medical conditions, overzealous training, and the unchecked use of dubious supplements and energy drinks .

Even more concerning, the study highlighted environmental factors—like poor ventilation and indoor air quality within gyms—as contributing risks to cardiac emergencies.

Key Components of the Advisory

The state’s health blueprint includes a suite of precautionary measures:

  • Mandatory Medical Fitness Screening before commencing any intense training routine.
  • Warm-Up and Cool-Down Protocols to safeguard the body during physical exertion .
  • A ban on uncertified supplements and energy drinks, and a clear directive to use only tested, certified nutritional products .
  • Visible Advisory Posters in all gyms and sports centers to educate members about the risks of “quick-result” supplements and unsafe practices .

Emergency Training: CPR & BLS

Addressing the inevitable—emergencies may still occur despite precautions—the government is rolling out a state-wide training campaign for gym staff and users in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques. These life-saving skills are being taught directly within fitness centers to ensure swift emergency response .

Backing of Institutions & Experts

Expert voices from cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and nutrition have shaped the advisory. PAU Vice-Chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal hailed it as a “health capsule”—a science-backed life-saving guide. GADVASU Vice-Chancellor Dr Jatinder Paul Singh Gill applauded the multidisciplinary debate that formed its foundations .

Cardiologist Dr Bishav Mohan from DMCH emphasized that many of these cardiac incidents are preventable through basic measures like respecting bodily limits, proper hydration, and regular medical checkups .

A Complementary Campus Upgrade

On the heels of the advisory, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) inaugurated a state-of-the-art gymnasium worth ₹1.5 crore, equipped with 64 advanced machines across 36 workout stations, including dedicated facilities for women. The university also reaffirmed its guidance toward natural, balanced diets over reliance on uncertified supplements .

Looking Ahead

The advisory represents a forward-thinking fusion of research, regulation, and readiness—ensuring that the quest for fitness does not come at the cost of health. It sets a precedent for other states to follow, positioning Punjab as a pioneer in safe, science-driven fitness culture for the youth.
