Delhi, December 10, 2024 (Punjab Khabarnama Bureau)- After suspending their foot march to Delhi till Tuesday, the farmers staging a sit-in on the Punjab-Haryana border will chart their next course of action today.
The farm leaders will hold a press conference at Shambhu Border at 4 pm to share the details about their next course.
Earlier, in the morning, the farmers carried out a cleanliness drive at a protest site, which saw a high-voltage action on December 6 and December 8 after paramilitary personnel and Haryana Police thwarted their attempts to move towards Delhi.
Over two dozen farmers were injured in the two attempts as the security personnel lobbed tear gas shells at the protesters.
Meanwhile, Dr Swaiman Singh, one of the faces of 2020 farmers’ protest, has come out in support of farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is sitting on fast unto death for past 15 days.
Swaiman, who is a practicing cardiologist in the USA, has sought support from the strong NRI community for the ongoing farmers’ protest.
The decision not to send any ‘jatha’ (group) of farmers till Tuesday was taken during a meeting of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political) at the Shambhu border.
The protesters have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by the security forces.
The farmers have been demanding a legal guarantee for the minimum support price of crops, farm debt waiver, pension for farmers and farm labourers, no hike in electricity tariff, withdrawal of police cases (against farmers) and “justice” for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
Summary: Farmers to begin their foot march today as part of the next phase of the ‘Dilli Chalo’ movement, demanding action on their issues.
