17 october 2024 : A shocking 80% of engineering professionals could face job loss by 2027 unless they adapt and upskill in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to a study by the management consulting firm Gartner.
The report highlights a popular saying that gained traction on LinkedIn during the rise of AI tools, particularly following the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022: “AI won’t replace your job, but someone using AI tools will.”
The introduction of ChatGPT marked a significant shift, as it could write, code, compose music, and perform various tasks without requiring advanced skills, thanks to its user-friendly interface.
This situation has led to two distinct groups: those who fear job loss due to AI and those who recognize the importance of learning to use these tools as a vital skill for the future.
For engineers, who often depend on traditional skills and methods, upskilling in AI is crucial for both survival and growth in the job market.
Upskilling can take various forms, such as online courses, workshops, and certifications focusing on AI and machine learning. Many educational institutions and online platforms are responding to industry demands by providing specialized programs.
Moreover, it’s not just about learning to use AI tools; essential soft skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and adaptability are also vital for success.
