October 1, 2024: Star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took two wickets for India on the fourth day of the second Test match, putting India in a strong position against Bangladesh, despite rain affecting the game. After heavy rain resulted in no play on the second and third days, the fourth day saw significant action with 18 wickets falling throughout the day. India set records for the fastest 50, 100, and 200 runs. Virat Kohli completed 27,000 international runs, and Ravindra Jadeja claimed his 300th wicket.
Bangladesh, aided by a century from Mominul Haque, scored 233 runs in their first innings, while India declared their first innings at 285 runs, losing nine wickets. By the end of the fourth day, Bangladesh had scored 26 runs for the loss of two wickets, still trailing India’s first innings score by 26 runs.
For India, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 72 runs off 51 balls, with India reaching 50 runs in just the third over. Shubman Gill contributed 39 runs, and Virat Kohli added 47 runs. During this innings, Kohli became the fourth batsman to surpass 27,000 runs in international cricket, joining the ranks of Sachin Tendulkar (34,357), Kumar Sangakkara (28,016), and Ricky Ponting (27,483).
KL Rahul scored 68 runs off 43 balls, and India set a new record for the fastest 100 runs in the eleventh over. They also broke Australia’s record for the fastest 200 runs, previously set against Pakistan in the 2017 Sydney Test, reaching the milestone in just 24.5 overs.
Earlier, India’s pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj, Aakash Deep, and Ashwin each claimed two wickets. Bangladesh lost the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim (11) in the sixth over, bowled by Bumrah, while building on their first day score of 107 for three.
Ravindra Jadeja Becomes the Seventh Indian to Take 300 Test Wickets
Ravindra Jadeja became the seventh Indian bowler to reach the milestone of 300 Test wickets when he took the wicket of Khalid Mahmood on the fourth day of the second Test against Bangladesh. Jadeja caught Mahmood’s return catch, ending Bangladesh’s innings at 233 runs. Other Indian bowlers with 300 Test wickets include Anil Kumble (619), Ashwin (524), Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), Ishant Sharma (311), and Zaheer Khan (311). Jadeja achieved this feat in his 74th Test match and became the second player after England’s Ian Botham to complete 300 wickets and 3,000 Test runs the fastest.
Additionally, Liton Das scored 13 runs, and Shakib Al Hasan, who is playing his last Test, was out for just 9 runs.
