25 september 2024 : France’s World Cup-winning defender Raphael Varane announced his retirement from football at the age of 31 on Wednesday, marking the end of his illustrious career following a serious knee injury.

Varane earned 93 caps for France between 2013 and 2022, playing a pivotal role in their triumph at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and their runner-up finish in Qatar four years later.

He began his club career at Ligue 1 side Lens before moving to Real Madrid in 2011, where he made 360 appearances and secured three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies during a highly successful period.

In 2021, Varane joined Manchester United, featuring 95 times across all competitions and contributing to their League Cup victory in 2023 and FA Cup win in 2024. He then transferred to Serie A club Como in July, where he sustained a knee injury during his debut.

“I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and now it’s time to stop and hang up my boots after ending my final game with a trophy at Wembley,” Varane wrote on Instagram, referring to United’s FA Cup win in May.

“I have no regrets and wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve achieved more than I ever dreamed of, but beyond the awards and trophies, I take pride in having remained true to my principles and leaving every place better than I found it.”

Varane also mentioned that he would continue with Como in a non-playing capacity.

“A new chapter begins off the pitch. I will stay with Como, just without my boots and shin pads. I look forward to sharing more about this soon,” he added.
