17 september 2024 : Olympic medalists Sakshi Malik, Aman Sehrawat, and former World Championship bronze medalist Geeta Phogat have announced the Wrestling Champions Super League (WCSL). However, this league, intended for the rising wrestlers of the country, has not received support from the national federation. Sakshi, along with Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, had led the wrestlers’ protest against former Indian Wrestling Federation (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan.
Following Bajrang and Vinesh’s joining the Congress party before the Haryana assembly elections next month, Sakshi has distanced herself from them.
Geeta expressed hope that the league will receive support from the federation and government. She mentioned, “Sakshi and I have been planning this league for a long time. It will soon take its final shape. We have not yet spoken to the WFI, but it would be great if the federation and government support us. This will be the first league run solely by the athletes. It is meant for the benefit of the players, and there should be no issue with it. It is an honor for us, and we will not stop anyone from participating.”
