5 septeber 2024 : World champion shot-putter Sachin Sarjerao Khilari set a new Asian record with a 16.32m throw, earning silver at the Paralympics. This throw surpassed his previous Asian record of 16.30m, achieved in May at the World Para-Athletics Championships in Japan.
Khilari’s silver medal was India’s 21st at the Games, adding to the country’s tally of three gold, eight silver, and ten bronze medals, positioning India 19th overall. Canada’s Greg Stewart claimed gold with a 16.38m throw, while Croatia’s Luka Bakovic took bronze with 16.27m.
This medal also marked India’s 11th in track-and-field, surpassing their previous Tokyo Paralympics record of one gold, five silver, and two bronze. Recent successes included silver and bronze in men’s high jump T63 and javelin throw F46, along with a bronze by Deepthi Jeevanji in the women’s 400m T20, making it India’s best day at the Games. Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu won silver and bronze in the high jump, while Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar secured silver and bronze in the javelin throw.
