12 august 2024 : According to industry representatives who attended the meeting, the amount of incentive provided may vary between hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles. Reports indicate that the Uttar Pradesh government has no intention of reversing the complete waiver of registration fees for plug-in and strong hybrid vehicles. This decision followed a lengthy meeting with prominent Indian automotive manufacturers, as reported by Business Standard, which cited both government and industry participants.

UP Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh conveyed to the companies that the incentives for plug-in and strong hybrid vehicles are designed to encourage the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, although this does not extend to electric vehicles. A source noted, “A hybrid car customer will be replacing an ICE car customer,” according to the report.

Industry representatives indicated that the incentive amounts might differ for hybrids and electric vehicles. A senior official mentioned, “A complete rollback of the registration tax waiver is unlikely; however, the extent of the waiver for hybrids and EVs may differ. Further clarity will be provided in due course.”

On July 5, the Uttar Pradesh government announced a waiver of the 8-10 percent registration tax on strong and plug-in hybrid vehicles, leading to a decrease in the on-road prices of these vehicles by as much as ₹4 lakh. The meeting was attended by representatives from eight companies, including Tata Motors, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, and Bajaj, as reported.

During the discussions, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Kia, and Mahindra & Mahindra expressed strong opposition to the July 5 order, while Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, and Bajaj voiced their support, according to the report.
