07 august 2024 : Virat Kohli, a key player, has been particularly disappointing in the initial two matches, struggling to secure significant runs. He scored only 24 in the first match and followed it with a mere 14 in the second, with both dismissals coming from spin bowlers.
In light of Kohli’s ongoing difficulties against spin, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali remarked that India’s lackluster performance reflects insufficient practice.
The dismissal of a player of Kohli’s stature, recognized as the world’s leading batsman, on two occasions by LBW raises significant concerns. While such dismissals might be expected from players like Iyer or Dube, Kohli’s situation indicates a lack of preparation,” Basit commented on his YouTube channel.
“It did not appear that this batting lineup is the dominant force in world cricket. I suspect that Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have not engaged in adequate practice. They seem to have arrived without proper preparation,” he further stated.
Ali also expressed criticism towards Shreyas Iyer’s performance, suggesting that he should be replaced by players such as Rinku Singh, Rishabh Pant, or Riyan Parag.
“I fail to see what Shreyas Iyer can contribute with such performances. It may be time to consider Rishabh Pant, Riyan Parag, and Rinku Singh,” Ali asserted.
“India’s domestic 50-over tournament will be crucial for Gautam Gambhir, as he will need to identify promising players from there. If selections are made based solely on reputation, the outcomes in the Champions Trophy may not be favorable,” he concluded.
