19 March 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : Police in Jalandhar have registered a case against 24 political leaders from the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party following a protest related to a demolition drive in the city. Authorities confirmed that 16 of the accused leaders have been released on bail.

The protest took place after local residents and political workers gathered to oppose the demolition of certain structures during an enforcement operation by municipal authorities. Demonstrators alleged that the action was unfair and demanded that the demolition process be halted.

According to police officials, the protest escalated when a group of political workers and supporters assembled at the site and attempted to block the demolition activity. Law enforcement personnel present at the location intervened to control the situation and maintain order.

Officials stated that cases were registered against the leaders for allegedly violating public order regulations and participating in unlawful assembly during the protest. Police said the action was taken after reviewing reports and evidence related to the incident.

Among the 24 leaders named in the case were members associated with both the Congress and the BJP. The involvement of leaders from rival political parties highlighted the broad support for the protest among different groups in the area.

Following the registration of the case, several of the accused leaders appeared before authorities and sought legal relief. Sixteen of them were later granted bail by the court, allowing them to remain out of custody while the investigation continues.

Political representatives involved in the protest argued that they were raising concerns on behalf of local residents affected by the demolition drive. They claimed that the action taken by authorities had caused distress among families living in the area.

Meanwhile, municipal officials said the demolition drive was part of an operation to remove illegal structures and enforce building regulations in the city. Authorities stated that such actions are carried out to ensure urban planning rules are followed.

Police emphasized that maintaining law and order during enforcement operations is essential. They said legal action was necessary after the protest disrupted official work and created tension at the site.

The incident has sparked political discussion in Jalandhar, with leaders from various parties expressing differing views on the demolition drive and the subsequent police action.

Observers say the case reflects ongoing tensions between residents, political groups and local authorities over urban development and enforcement activities in the region.

As the investigation continues, officials are expected to review evidence and statements from those involved in the protest. The remaining accused leaders may also seek bail or legal remedies as the case proceeds through the judicial process.
