9 March 2026 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau :  The Maharashtra Health Department has launched a statewide vaccination drive to administer the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine to young girls, marking the initiative on International Women’s Day. The program aims to protect girls from infections caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is a leading cause of Cervical Cancer.

Under the initiative, girls in the recommended age group will receive the vaccine through government health facilities and school-based vaccination programs across Maharashtra. Health officials say the campaign is part of a broader effort to strengthen preventive healthcare for women and reduce cancer-related deaths in the future.

HPV infection is one of the most common viral infections affecting the reproductive system and is responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases worldwide. By vaccinating girls at an early age, health authorities aim to provide long-term protection against the virus before exposure occurs.

Officials from the state health department said awareness campaigns will also be conducted to educate parents, students, and communities about the importance of HPV vaccination. Healthcare workers will play a key role in guiding families and ensuring that eligible girls receive the recommended doses.

Public health experts have welcomed the initiative, stating that large-scale vaccination programs are crucial for preventing cervical cancer and improving women’s health outcomes. They noted that similar programs in other regions have significantly reduced HPV infections and related diseases.

The launch on International Women’s Day highlights the government’s focus on women’s health and preventive care. Authorities believe the program will help increase vaccine coverage and encourage more families to participate in the initiative.

Health officials also emphasized that early detection through screening and timely vaccination are among the most effective strategies to combat cervical cancer. The state government aims to gradually expand the program to ensure wider access to the vaccine across urban and rural areas.

The initiative is expected to benefit thousands of girls and contribute to long-term improvements in public health in Maharashtra.
