29 Aug 2025 (Punjab Khabarnama Bureau): Amid the devastation caused by floods in Punjab, a major update regarding the Ghaggar River has created a new threat for the people of the state. At 8 AM today, the water level of the Ghaggar River crossed 70,000 cusecs. Sharing the details, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal said that due to rainfall in the river’s catchment area and the opening of Sukhna Lake’s floodgates, a serious threat has emerged for villages located along the banks of the Dera Bassi sub-division. Considering this, the DC has advised villagers to remain alert.
Villages immediately at risk
Due to the rising water in the Ghaggar River, the villages of Tiwana, Khajoor Mandi, Sadhanpur, Sarseeni, Alamgir, Dangdhera, Mubarakpur, Mirpur, and Bakarpur could be affected. Meanwhile, the road from Mubarakpur to Dhakoli has been closed. Heavy rainfall in hilly areas and overnight downpours in the Dera Bassi region have further raised the water level, potentially disrupting public movement. For assistance, the DC office has released helpline numbers: 0172-2219506 and 01762-283224 for the Dera Bassi subdivision.
DC’s appeal to villagers
In view of the strong water flow and flood warning, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal visited the Tiwana Dam on the Ghaggar River today and reviewed the situation. She assured villagers that the local administration is fully alert and prepared to handle any situation. The DC urged people to stay away from riverbanks and cooperate with the administration to ensure their safety.
Summary : Punjab government has issued a warning alert with advisory for villages at risk, urging residents to stay cautious and prepared.
