Chandigarh February 21 (Punjab Khabarnama Bureau):  The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) executive members are set to hold a crucial meeting today to discuss the resignation of president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami. The meeting will determine whether his resignation is accepted or not.

Three days ago, Advocate Dhami submitted his resignation at Sri Akal Takht Sahib office. The controversy intensified after Akal Takht Jathedar Raghubir Singh shared a post following the removal of former Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh from Takht Sri Damdama Sahib on February 13.

Former Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has termed Dhami’s resignation as “unfortunate” and claimed that Jathedar Raghubir Singh’s post indirectly justified his removal. Notably, the SGPC had removed Giani Harpreet Singh from his position around 10 days ago.

While resigning, Advocate Dhami clarified that the decision to remove Giani Harpreet Singh was taken after thorough discussions lasting over an hour and a half, with 14 executive members participating. He emphasised that everyone was given a chance to voice their opinions before a final decision was made.

“Since the SGPC is a managerial body of Sikhs and Sri Akal Takht Sahib is the supreme seat of Sikh authority, I am stepping down from my position on moral grounds,” Advocate Dhami said.

In his post, Jathedar Raguhbir Singh raised concerns over the removal of Giani Harpreet Singh, calling it unjust and damaging to the institution.

He expressed deep sorrow over recent developments and stated that the method and reasoning behind Giani Harpreet Singh’s removal were inappropriate.

Summary: The SGPC executive will meet today to decide on Advocate Dhami’s resignation as chief, addressing the future leadership of the organization.
