Delhi, 26 December 2024: Renowned writer and Jnanpith Award winner M.T. Vasudevan Nair passed away at the age of 91. Apart from literature, he was also a well-known figure in Malayalam cinema. The actor and experienced writer was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala. Nair, lovingly known as M.T., left an indelible legacy in both literature and cinema. He had been in the hospital for the past 11 days after suffering a heart attack, which led to his hospitalization. On Tuesday night, he was removed from ventilator support, but his condition worsened on Wednesday, and he passed away by night.

A Life Filled with Struggles
Born on July 15, 1933, in Kudallore, Ponnani Taluk, M.T.’s early life was filled with challenges. These struggles deeply influenced his writing. After earning a degree in Chemistry from Victoria College, Palakkad, in 1953, he worked as a teacher for a while. In 1957, he began his career as a writer, working as an associate editor for ‘Mathrubhumi.’

M.T. Vasudevan Nair had a passion for writing since childhood. He began writing while in college with “Raktam Purantha Manthrikal.” In the world of cinema, M.T. started writing stories for the Malayalam film Murapennu and later ventured into film direction. He directed films like Nirmalyam, which won the National Award for Best Feature Film. He then went on to direct movies such as Bandhanam and Kadavu.
