Congress workers found two trucks carrying more than 4,000 cases of IMFL liquor here late on Monday night. Sources said that some workers had received secret information that trucks laden with liquor would be coming into the Dera Baba Nanak area around midnight.
Led by Udayveer Singh Randhawa, son of Congress candidate Jatinder Kaur, party workers intercepted two trucks and recovered the contraband, which was later handed over to the police. The trucks were taken to the Ghanian-Ke-Bangar police station.
Sonu, the driver of one of the trucks, said he had loaded the liquor near the office of the Ajnala municipal committee. “The owner of the vehicles ordered me to take the liquor to Dera Baba Nanak. Both the trucks contained nearly 4,000 cases,” he said.
He refused to divulge the name of the truck owner.
Congress men claimed that the liquor was on its way to the residence of an AAP loyalist in Shahpur Jajjan village, which forms a part of this Assembly seat.
An officer of the Batala police said investigations were on and a case would be registered soon.
Udayveer Singh said Ajnala town formed a part of the Assembly seat represented by Cabinet minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal. He added that since the liquor was loaded from Ajnala town, the police should question the minister.
Meanwhile, AAP candidate Gurdeep Singh Randhawa said that he had nothing to do with the trucks or the recovered liquor.
