17 october 2024 : A couple serving in the Indian armed forces— the husband, a flight lieutenant in the Indian Air Force (IAF), and the wife, an Army captain—allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday. The wife left behind a suicide note requesting a joint cremation with her husband, which surprised the police as both deaths occurred on the same day in different cities— the husband in Agra and the wife in Delhi.

The couple has been identified as Flight Lieutenant Deen Dayal Deep (32), stationed at Kheria Air Force Station in Agra, and his wife, Captain Renu Tanwar, posted at the military hospital in the same city. Captain Tanwar was found dead at the officers’ mess in Delhi Cantonment, while Deep was discovered by his colleagues, hanging in his quarters at the Air Force station in Agra.

A suicide note, reportedly written by Captain Tanwar, was recovered, in which she requested a joint cremation with her husband. However, no suicide note was found at Deep’s residence in Agra.

According to Agra City Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Suraj Kumar Rai, Air Force officials notified them of Deep’s death after breaking into his room when he did not wake up on Tuesday. His colleagues reported that Deep, a native of Nalanda district in Bihar, had been in good spirits the previous evening, cracking jokes and engaging in normal conversation during dinner before returning to his quarters without displaying any signs of distress.

Agra Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mayank Tiwari confirmed that Deep’s postmortem revealed asphyxiation as the cause of death. His family was on their way to Agra and might offer more information to help the police investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.
