7 october 2024 : Robert Lewandowski’s 26-minute hat-trick powered La Liga leaders Barcelona to a commanding 3-0 victory over Alaves on Sunday, extending their lead over Real Madrid by three points.
The Polish striker, now with 10 goals in nine league games, strengthened his position as the league’s top scorer with his first-half treble. Barcelona responded to Madrid’s win over Villarreal on Saturday, comfortably controlling the match at Alaves’ Mendizorroza stadium under new coach Hansi Flick.
Lewandowski credited his teammates for their passing, making it easier for him to find the net. “We started strong, aiming to attack and score goals from the first minute,” he said to DAZN. “After scoring three in the first half, the second half was about maintaining control.”
Barcelona, with eight wins in nine league matches, dominated the game from the outset. Lewandowski and Raphinha were key figures, with the Brazilian providing an assist for Lewandowski’s opener from a free-kick. Raphinha then set up Lewandowski again after a run down the wing, allowing the striker to score easily. The veteran completed his hat-trick when Eric Garcia, subbing in for the injured Ferran Torres, provided the assist.
Lewandowski’s sharp form this season has impressed Flick, who praised the 36-year-old for his consistent scoring. “In front of goal, Lewy is the best player for me,” Flick said. “He’s fully fit and performing brilliantly.”
Alaves thought they had pulled one back with a Toni Martinez header, but it was ruled offside. Martinez later hit the post, and the hosts had another goal disallowed for offside. Despite their efforts, Alaves struggled to break through Barcelona’s high defensive line, being flagged offside 11 times.
Alaves winger Abde Rebbach acknowledged Barcelona’s dominance in the first half but noted his team improved in the second. “We fought until the end, and we’re known for our effort,” he said to DAZN.
Later in the day, Atletico Madrid faced Real Sociedad, and Sevilla hosted Real Betis in the Seville derby.
