1 october 2024 : Lionel Messi once again showcased his brilliance by scoring twice as Inter Miami narrowly defeated the defending MLS champions, Columbus Crew, 3-2 to clinch the Supporters’ Shield, which recognizes the team with the best regular-season record. Although Messi had been relatively quiet until just before halftime, he delivered two game-changing moments in quick succession that shifted the momentum in Miami’s favor.

Messi’s first goal came in the 45th minute, where he expertly controlled a long ball with his chest inside the penalty area. A fortunate deflection off Crew defender Malte Amundsen allowed him to nudge the ball past Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, giving Miami a lead just before the halftime whistle.

Just minutes later, Messi struck again, this time from a free-kick just outside the box. Noticing a poorly constructed wall, the Argentine superstar curled a stunning shot into the top corner with pinpoint accuracy, leaving Schulte completely motionless and extending Miami’s lead to 2-0.

The Crew responded immediately after the break, with Diego Rossi firing a well-placed shot into the far corner to reduce the deficit. However, a defensive blunder involving Schulte and Rudy Camacho allowed Luis Suarez to head into an empty net, pushing Miami’s advantage to 3-1.

Despite being down, Columbus fought back and earned a penalty, which Cucho Hernandez converted to bring the score to 3-2. However, their comeback hopes were hampered when Camacho received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge. Although Columbus was awarded another late penalty that could have equalized the match, Hernandez’s weak attempt was saved by Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender, securing a thrilling victory for the home side.

Messi’s two goals, including that stunning free-kick, proved decisive, propelling Inter Miami closer to MLS Cup glory.
