October 1, 2024: P.T. Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), expressed deep concern today regarding the executive committee members’ failure to honor Olympic medalists. She accused the finance committee of withholding funds intended for the preparation of Indian athletes for the Paris Games. Despite India winning six medals, including two historic bronze medals by shooter Manu Bhaker, Usha stated that the committee seems unwilling to celebrate their success, which deeply disappoints her.
In her statement, Usha emphasized that these athletes have brought pride to the nation and it is the IOA’s responsibility to celebrate their achievements with the respect they deserve. She noted that it is alarming that the executive committee has failed to discuss or organize an awards ceremony for the athletes despite their return to the country in mid-August.
Usha revealed that the proposal to grant each athlete preparing for the Olympics ₹2 lakh and each coach ₹1 lakh was blocked by the finance committee, particularly by IOA treasurer Sahadev Yadav. The IOA had planned to award individual medalists between ₹50 lakh and ₹1 crore, while coaches were to receive ₹15 to ₹25 lakh. Usha stated that by not implementing these plans, the IOA is disappointing the athletes who have elevated the pride of the country.
