5 september 2024 : In “GOAT,” director Venkat Prabhu presents an action-filled drama featuring Thalapathy Vijay in dual roles, showcasing both the young and older versions of his character. The film opens in 2008 Kenya, where a special anti-terrorist squad (SATS) team, led by Vijay’s character Gandhi, successfully recovers stolen uranium. Despite their victory, the team faces criticism from their superior and personal issues arise as Gandhi’s wife becomes suspicious of his activities.
The plot takes a dark turn when Gandhi’s family is attacked during a mission in Thailand, resulting in his wife being hospitalized and his son being kidnapped and killed. Years later, Gandhi, now in a desk job and separated from his wife, faces new threats from a character named Sanjay. The narrative explores how Gandhi and his SATS team confront these challenges and seek resolution.
Prabhu’s direction stands out for its global scope, blending family drama, high-octane action, and humor with various twists and tributes. Vijay’s dual roles are a highlight, offering a fresh take compared to his recent films. The first half of “GOAT” is particularly engaging, with a surprising interval block setting up the stage for the intense second half.
Prabhu’s admiration for Vijay and Kollywood is evident, with numerous references and tributes throughout the film. Despite some lags, Vijay’s performance and the ensemble cast’s contributions make up for it. The music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, including a remix of an Ilaiyaraja song and the soulful “Chinna Chinna Kangal,” complements the film well.
Overall, “GOAT” is a treat for Thalapathy Vijay fans and audiences seeking an action-packed, entertaining film.
