4 september 2024 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Singapore on Wednesday, marking the start of a two-day visit aimed at strengthening strategic ties with the Southeast Asian nation. This visit follows his trip to Brunei and is at the invitation of Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. It is Modi’s fifth official visit to Singapore.
Throughout his visit, Modi is set to engage with three generations of Singaporean leadership, including an official reception at Parliament House on Thursday and a meeting with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
The timing of this visit coincides with Wong’s recent assumption of office and Modi’s third term as Prime Minister of India. Modi had expressed his anticipation for discussions to enhance the strategic partnership between India and Singapore, focusing on advanced manufacturing, digitalization, and sustainable development.
Accompanied by Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and other officials, Modi will also meet with Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. Separate meals will be hosted by Wong and Lee.
Additionally, Modi will engage with Singaporean business leaders and those involved in the semiconductor industry. The visit aims to foster collaboration between India and Singapore in the semiconductor sector, with plans to sign agreements for skills development and workforce training in this field. This initiative is expected to enhance opportunities for Indian youth through improved skills and career prospects.
