20 august 2024 : A tennis icon launched a scathing remark at Iga Swiatek following her criticism of the WTA schedule. Iga Swiatek, who currently holds the title of the world’s No. 1 female tennis player, expressed her apprehensions regarding the strenuous WTA calendar during the Cincinnati Open. Having secured five titles this year, including the prestigious French Open, Swiatek condemned the overcrowded schedule, asserting that it diminishes the enjoyment of tennis and is unsustainable for athletes.
“What can I say? I’ve been somewhat of an advocate for the notion that we shouldn’t, I don’t know… be compelled to play more,” she conveyed to SkySports. “Clearly, it is not our decision, but I firmly believe we have an excess of tournaments in the season. It detracts from the enjoyment of tennis for us. While I genuinely appreciate competing in all these venues, it is quite exhausting. I don’t think it ought to be this way because we deserve a bit more rest. Perhaps some will resent me for saying that.”
In reaction to Swiatek’s remarks, former tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov vehemently criticized her on social media. Kafelnikov, a two-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medalist, implied that Swiatek’s grievances were unjustified and even contended that she should receive a reduced salary for voicing such opinions. His statements ignited controversy, underscoring the ongoing discussion regarding the physical and mental strains faced by professional tennis players.
He remarked on X: “Is someone forcing you to play??? All you do is complain!! Let me tell you what you deserve! You deserve to be compensated significantly less than you currently are!! How about that??”
Swiatek’s criticism is part of a broader trend; numerous players have voiced similar discontent with the tennis calendar, which frequently allows minimal time for recovery. The pressure to uphold rankings and secure financial stability compels players to participate in more tournaments than may be advisable for their well-being. This relentless schedule can result in injuries and burnout, ultimately jeopardizing their careers.
Tennis journalist Bastien Fachan defended Swiatek: “She’s way more successful at 23 than you were in your entire career, sit this one out champ.”
One fan defended Swiatek by saying: “How can a former pro talk such sh*t. You should be ashamed of yourself. You can only dream of achieving what she already has. What she has said is 100% correct and speaking out is not complaining.”
Another user said: “There’s this thing called mandatory tournaments, and unless you have an injury, you have to or there are penalties. Taking a 0 on the points plus maybe even a fine. 6 WTA 500s, 10 WTA 1000s, and 4 GS is a lot. Even if they keep the 12 day 1000s, no 500s should be mandatory.”
Daria Kasatkina, another prominent player, came to Swiatek’s defense, pointing out the significant differences in earnings between past and present players.
