20 august 2024 : In the ongoing investigation and protests surrounding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the mother-in-law of the accused, Sanjoy Roy, asserted that he had a history of violence against his former spouse. She further alleged that he physically assaulted his three-month-pregnant wife, resulting in a miscarriage. The mother-in-law called for Sanjoy Roy to be executed for his alleged crimes.
Additionally, she suggested that others may have been involved in the rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, stating that Sanjoy Roy could not have acted alone.
Reflecting on her daughter’s experiences with Sanjoy Roy, she informed the news agency ANI that their relationship was fraught with tension, noting that her daughter had filed a police complaint against him for physical abuse.
“My relationship with him was very strained,” she remarked. “Initially, everything seemed fine for six months. However, when she was three months pregnant, he caused a miscarriage. He physically assaulted her, leading to a police report. After that, my daughter suffered from ongoing health issues, and I covered all her medical expenses,” the woman stated, as quoted by ANI.
“Sanjay was not a good person. He should be hanged or face whatever punishment is deemed appropriate. I will not comment further on the crime. He could not have acted alone; he is incapable of doing this by himself,” she added.
In related developments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated the accused, Sanjoy Roy, on Monday, as they seek to determine whether he acted independently in the alleged crime.
The investigators also visited the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar to consult with officers who were involved in the initial investigation, according to an official statement.
Meanwhile, a local court granted the CBI permission on Monday to conduct a polygraph examination on Roy, although a date for the test has yet to be established, as reported by another official to the news agency PTI.
In accordance with established procedures, the accused must be presented before a magistrate, who will inquire whether the individual consents to undergo a polygraph examination, as stated by the official.
The tragic rape and murder of the trainee doctor have ignited significant public outrage and protests in numerous cities, with demands for justice and accountability for the perpetrator. The Supreme Court has taken notice of the case on its own initiative, with a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud set to hear the matter on Tuesday.
On August 18, a team from the CBI conducted an examination and performed 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital located in Kolkata.
The West Bengal government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations of financial misconduct at RG Kar Hospital from January 2021 to the present.
As per a notification from the Home and Hill Affairs Department, the SIT is authorized to access any pertinent documents from government departments and private entities necessary for the swift completion of the investigation. Additionally, the SIT has been instructed to submit its initial report to the state government within one month of its formation.
