15 august 2024 : Following Kane Williamson and Lockie Ferguson, Devon Conway has now joined the ranks of players opting out of New Zealand’s central contract system. Instead, the left-handed batsman has chosen to pursue a casual playing contract for the upcoming year.
“The choice to forgo a central playing contract was not made lightly; however, I believe it is the most suitable decision for myself and my family at this time,” Conway remarked.
At 33 years of age, Conway has declined the central contract in order to participate in the SA20 league scheduled for January of the following year. “I would like to express my gratitude to New Zealand Cricket for their support throughout this process,” he stated.
Nonetheless, Conway remains optimistic about his involvement in all forthcoming Test matches for New Zealand, as well as the Champions Trophy in 2025. “Representing the Black Caps remains the pinnacle of my career, and I am deeply passionate about playing for New Zealand and achieving success in international cricket,” Conway emphasized.
“I am eager to be part of the upcoming Test squads during this crucial phase of the ICC World Test Championship cycle and look forward to potentially participating in the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan next February, should I be selected,” he added.
In addition, young Finn Allen has also opted out of the contract, but he will not be offered a casual contract. His selection will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Previously, the influential Williamson stepped down as captain of the white-ball formats following the team’s early exit from the T20 World Cup and has also declined the national contract for the 2024-25 season.
Nevertheless, he has reaffirmed his commitment to the Black Caps whenever required and has left the possibility open for accepting a central contract in the future.
“The 33-year-old has chosen to take advantage of a unique set of circumstances this summer, during which there is minimal international cricket scheduled in New Zealand throughout the January window,” New Zealand Cricket noted in their statement at that time.
