13 august 2024 : The case involving the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata has taken a tragic turn, with her body discovered at RG Kar Medical College. The young physician, who was assaulted and killed last week, had been watching the Paris Olympics 2024 late at night at a state-run medical facility in the city just prior to the incident. Her partially clothed remains were located in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday morning, leading to the arrest of a civic volunteer the following day.
According to an officer, “The victim was on-call duty and, along with four colleagues, had ordered dinner, which they consumed in the seminar room around 12:30 am. They also viewed the Olympics before she retired to sleep in the same room.”
The postgraduate trainee doctor was reportedly watching the final event featuring javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra during the Paris Olympics 2024.
Who is Sanjoy Roy, the suspect in this case?
Sanjoy Roy, a 33-year-old man, has been apprehended in connection with the doctor’s rape and murder in Kolkata. He became a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police in 2019 and has been married multiple times, earning a reputation as a “womanizer,” according to police reports.
Investigations revealed that he had a history of domestic violence against his spouses, as noted by an officer.
Roy is also said to have an addiction to pornography, with his mobile device containing numerous disturbing and violent materials, as reported by police on Monday.
“The content found on his phone was quite unsettling and aggressive. We are concerned about his mental state, as engaging with such material is highly abnormal,” the officer remarked.
The rape and murder of the Kolkata doctor have incited widespread protests among resident doctors in government hospitals nationwide, prompting them to initiate an indefinite strike on Monday.
In response to the situation, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the state police do not resolve the case by Sunday.
