12 august 2024 : On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that she would transfer the investigation of the heinous rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the local police do not resolve the case by Sunday.

Banerjee stated, “Should the police fail to make progress by Sunday, we will refer the case to the CBI. Nevertheless, it is important to note that the success rate of the central agency is quite low,” as reported by PTI following her visit to the victim’s residence.

Protests regarding the tragic incident continue to escalate. Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has resigned from his position and from government service.

“I can no longer endure this humiliation. The accusations against me are entirely false and fabricated. A student movement has been orchestrated to oust me, driven by political motives. I notified the police within an hour of the incident, and I have provided them with the CCTV footage,” he stated to PTI.

Mamata Banerjee has expressed her intention to pursue the death penalty for the perpetrator, indicating that her administration would not oppose a CBI investigation if requested by the students. “If they lack confidence in the West Bengal government, they are free to approach any investigative body; we will not object,” she remarked.

Details from the autopsy report of the 28-year-old victim revealed disturbing information regarding her injuries. The report indicated that the crime occurred between 3 and 6 PM, with evidence of bleeding from both the victim’s eyes and mouth. Additionally, there were multiple injuries on her face, nails, and private areas, along with wounds on her abdomen, left leg, neck, right hand, right finger, and lips, as reported .
