06 august 2024 : A day following the resignation and subsequent departure of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India, Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar informed Parliament on Tuesday that the government was in communication with officials in Dhaka and was closely monitoring the situation concerning minorities in that nation.
In his address to the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar noted that Hasina had sought permission to travel to India on short notice and arrived in Delhi on Monday evening. He remarked that significant divisions had been present in Bangladesh since the parliamentary elections held in January of this year, which led to a student protest movement that began in June.
Jaishankar stated that despite the imposition of a curfew, protesters gathered in Dhaka on August 5. It is understood that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina decided to resign after a meeting with security establishment leaders. She requested permission to temporarily come to India and Bangladeshi authorities also requested flight clearance. She arrived in Delhi yesterday evening.
