New Delhi, June 25 : Lok Sabha Member elected from Sangrur Parliamentary Constituency and Aam Aadmi Party leader Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer took oath as Member of Lok Sabha in Parliament today. On the occasion Chief Minister Punjab Bhagwant Singh Mann along with parents and wife of Meet Hayer were present in the Parliament complex.
Meet Hayer took oath in Punjabi. After taking the oath, Meet Hayer also raised the slogan of ‘Inqulab Zindabaad’ and ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ while paying homage to the freedom fighters, farmers and soldiers of the country.
35-year-old Meet Hayer won this Lok Sabha election on Aam Aadmi Party ticket by defeating his nearest rival Sukhpal Singh Khaira of Congress with a margin of 1,72,560 votes. This was his first Lok Sabha election. Before this, he was elected MLA twice consecutively from Barnala Vidhan Sabha constituency in 2017 and 2022. From the year 2022, he was serving as a cabinet minister in the state government led by Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann.
Meet Hayer’s native village is Kurd (Chapa) of Mahal Kalan constituency in Barnala district and he is a resident of Barnala city. After completing his schooling at Barnala, he did Mechanical Engineering at Swami Vivekananda Institute of Engineering and Technology (SVIET) Banur. He was preparing for the Civil Services Examination when he joined the movement led by Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal and then he became the founder member of the Aam Aadmi Party. Meet Hayer was also the president of Aam Aadmi Party’s youth wing.
Apart from remaining cabinet minister in-charge of the Sports and Youth Services, Water Resources, Mining, Higher Education and Languages, School Education, Administrative Reforms, Environment, Science and Technology and Printing and Stationery departments, Meet Hayer is also a good cricket and badminton player. He is very interested in environmental conservation and social work.
