Bathinda 19 June 2024 Punjab Khabarnama : Taking the vacant seats in the Punjab assembly to four, Barnala MLA Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer resigned from his assembly constituency on Tuesday upon his election as MP from Sangrur Lok Sabha seat. Sports minister in Punjab govt, Hayer was elected from Barnala for a second term in March 2022. Earlier, he had won from the assembly constituency in 2017.
Apart from Hayer, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned from Gidderbaha assembly segment upon his election from Ludhiana parliamentary constituency, former deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa from Bakba Bakala assembly segment upon his election from Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency and Raj Kumar Chabbewal from Chabbewal assembly segment upon his election from Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency.
The field is now clear for the Punjab assembly speaker to announce all the four assembly constituencies as vacant upon accepting the resignations, thus paving the way for byelections at these four assembly constituencies.
Process is already in motion for byelection in Jalandhar West assembly segment to be held on July 10 after the resignation of sitting MLA Sheetal Angural was accepted.
The four byelections are expected to be considered as a litmus test for ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Congress only recently won seven of the 13 parliamentary constituencies in the state.
