18 June 2024 Punjab Khabarnama : The BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) conducted an interview with former India opener and Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir and another former India opening batsman WV Raman on Tuesday for the post of Indian men’s team’s head coach as the tenure of current incumbent Rahul Dravid comes to a close after the ongoing T20 World Cup.
“Yes, Gambhir appeared for the interview with the CAC.
“Raman was interviewed after Gambhir. It was also on zoom. He also gave his presentation on his vision and road map on Indian cricket. The interview went for around 40 minutes. There were some initial questions by the committee before they looked at the presentation,” the source further added.
More details of the interaction between Gambhir and Malhotra, along with the two other CAC members, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik, are yet to be known.
Gambhir is expected to be the sole candidate in the running for the position, with his appointment for the job almost confirmed and could be announced within the next two days.
An Apex Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening, during which secretary Jay Shah is expected to brief the members about the coach selection process before the official announcement is made.
It is understood that the discussion centered around Gambhir’s vision for the next three years, which will include three ICC tournaments across various formats.
The CAC is also conducting interviews for the North Zone selector’s position.
The team is currently in Barbados for the Super 8 matches, having remained undefeated in the group league stage. They are set to face Afghanistan on June 20.
Gambhir became the frontrunner for the India coach’s role following KKR’s third IPL title triumph under Gambhir. He was the KRR captain in 2012 and 2014, and the team’s mentor for the 2024 season.
