June 12 (Punjab Khabarnama) : Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s largest healthcare product manufacturing companies, has agreed to a settlement. The company has agreed to a $700 million settlement to settle the matter after an investigation by 42 US states and Washington, DC. The investigation was about the presence of cancer-causing elements in baby powder and other talcum-based products.
Goods sold by misleading people!
According to a news, this settlement also proves the allegations that Johnson & Johnson misled customers regarding the safety of its talcum products. Although the company has currently stopped the sale of this product, these products were being sold for more than a century before stopping the sale.
What did the company say
However, J&J has not admitted any wrongdoing under this agreement with the states. The settlement process included leaders of states like Florida, North Carolina and Texas. The company says that its talc products are safe and do not cause cancer. They announced the agreement in principle in January.
A big win for consumer product safety
“This is a huge advancement for consumer product safety,” Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody said in a statement. Notably, Johnson & Johnson is dealing with a large number of lawsuits related to its talc products. As of March 31, about 61,490 individuals have sued the company. Most of these cases involve women suffering from ovarian cancer, while some plaintiffs suffer from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
Just last year, J&J stopped selling its talc-based baby powder worldwide, opting for corn starch as the primary ingredient of this powder. The company says its products are asbestos-free.
