Haryana Police cracks down on Cybercrime; Blocks Over 70,000 fraudulent numbers

Chandigarh, March 31 (punjabkhabarnama) : Haryana Police has achieved a significant milestone in combating cybercrime. In February, the police successfully froze 60 percent of the defrauded amounts in cases where complaints were registered within 6 hours of the incident. Haryana Police Director General. Sh. During a meeting with senior police officers at the Police Headquarters in Panchkula, DGP, Sh. Shatrujeet Kapur commended the efforts of the Cyber Helpline Team-1930 for the achievement. In the meeting, it was revealed that swift action is crucial. By promptly addressing complaints registered within six hours of the cyber fraud, 60 percent of the defrauded amounts were immediately frozen. However, at the same time, out of the complaints received after six hours, only 19 percent of the amount could be frozen. In September 2023, Haryana Police was ranked 23rd in the country, holding 8.62 percent of the money. In February, however, it reached the first position in the country by holding 27.60 percent of the amount. In February, an amount of Rs. 15.50 crore was saved from cyber fraud in Haryana.

Review and refinement of cyber fraud prevention measures:

DGP, Sh. Kapur reviewed the ongoing efforts to prevent cyber fraud. The meeting revealed that Haryana Police effectively acted on complaints received within the first 6 hours in February, saving over Rs. 6.67 crore from being defrauded.

Collaboration for Stronger Défense-

The meeting highlighted that through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) in New Delhi, Haryana Police and representatives of 20 major banks are working together to prevent cyber fraud and ensure the fastest possible freezing of defrauded amounts. Additionally, nodal officers from HDFC Access, PNB, and Haryana Police are working closely in the Haryana 112 building in Panchkula to facilitate the immediate freezing of defrauded amounts.

Operation Cyber Akram: Adopting an Aggressive Approach

DGP said that Operation Cyber Akram has been launched in Haryana.  This initiative aims to prevent cybercrime and apprehend criminals, adopting a more aggressive approach to combating cybercrime.

Combating Fake Helpline Numbers-

The meeting primarily focused on efforts to formulate an effective action plan to combat fraud through fake helpline numbers, especially those available on Google. Expressing concern over the misuse of Google’s search engine by cybercriminals, Sh. Kapur said that a meeting with Google representatives will be held soon. The objective of this meeting is to devise strategies to curb cybercriminal activities on Google platforms.

Dialogue with Mobile Network Providers-

The meeting also discussed blocking numbers used in cyber fraud with representatives from mobile companies. SP, Cyber, Sh. Amit Dahiya informed the meeting that over 70,000 numbers involved in cyber fraud have been blocked in Haryana in the last 11 months.

60 Hotspot Areas Identified Nationwide-

The meeting revealed that 60 hotspot areas have been identified nationwide for cybercrime. Data on the numbers involved in cybercrime in these hotspot areas has been compiled, and meetings are being scheduled with the concerned companies to facilitate their blocking.
