Chandigarh, March 2 (Punjab khabarnama) : Under the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’, the Central Power and New and Renewable Energy Department will provide free electricity for up to 300 units every month on installing solar panels on the roof. Prime Minister, Sh. Narendra Modi launched this scheme on February 13, 2024.

Sharing more details in this regard an official spokesperson said that the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ will provide a CFA of 60 percent of the additional system cost for systems with a capacity of 2 kilowatts and 40 percent of the additional system cost for systems with a capacity of 2 to 3 kilowatts. The CFA will be capped at 3 kilowatts. At current standard prices, this translates to a subsidy of Rs. 30,000 for a one-kilowatt system, Rs. 60,000 for a two-kilowatt system, and Rs. 78,000 for a three-kilowatt or larger system.

The Spokesperson further said that families participating in this scheme will apply for subsidies through the national portal and will be able to select an appropriate vendor for installing solar energy on their roofs. The national portal will assist families in their decision-making process by providing relevant information about the appropriate size of the system, calculation of benefits, vendor ratings, etc.

The spokesperson said that families participating in this scheme will also be eligible to take advantage of a nearly 7 percent interest-free loan for the installation of residential rooftop solar (RTS) systems up to 3 kilowatts. This will benefit urban local bodies and panchayati raj institutions to promote RTS installations in their areas through various incentives.

Through this scheme, households will not only save on their electricity bills but will also be able to earn additional income through the sale of excess electricity. Since the launch of this scheme, the government has initiated a comprehensive campaign to increase awareness and receive applications from interested families.
