11 october 2024 : Millions worldwide suffer from acne and acne scars, which can often persist beyond adolescence into adulthood. Although treatments vary, many people see little improvement, with skin either worsening or remaining the same. Kusha Kapila, in a conversation with Mira Rajput, shared lifestyle and diet adjustments that helped her achieve clearer skin, and dermatologist Dr. Vijaya Gowri Bandaru provided advice on how others can also manage acne through simple changes.
Here are some key tips:
- Dietary Changes: Avoid Sugar and Milk
Acne flare-ups are often linked to diet, particularly sugar and dairy. Sugar can increase insulin levels and inflammation, leading to more acne and oily skin. Cutting back on sugary foods and drinks can improve skin clarity and prevent breakouts. Similarly, milk, due to its hormones, can exacerbate acne, especially for sensitive skin. Opting for plant-based milk like almond or oat milk can help reduce breakouts. - Ice Dunks for Skin Relief
Submerging your face in ice-cold water for 10-15 seconds can tighten pores and soothe irritated skin. The cold temperature reduces redness, calms active acne, and helps with inflammation. However, excessive use may cause dryness, so it’s important to limit it. - Prebiotics from Onions for Gut Health
Onions are rich in prebiotics, particularly fructooligosaccharides, which nourish beneficial bacteria in the gut and support healthy digestion. They help regulate blood sugar, support hair growth, improve skin, and reduce acne. Additionally, onions contain quercetin, which helps protect bones and lower cholesterol.
These simple lifestyle and diet changes can go a long way in managing acne and improving skin health from within.
