The deadline fixed by the court for issuing the schedule for the municipal elections will end on Monday. It is pertinent to mention here that the term of the general house of many municipal corporations and municipal committees of Punjab, including Ludhiana, has been completed between January and April last year, but since then, due to the government not holding fresh elections, the municipal corporations are functioning without councillors and mayors.
For this, the government first made the excuse of not finalizing the fresh ward division and then cited the case being pending in the court, but now the court has reprimanded the government for not holding fresh elections within 6 months of the completion of the tenure of the General House of the Municipal Corporation as per the rules.
In this case, the deadline fixed by the court for issuing the schedule for the municipal elections will be completed on Monday. According to the information received, before this, after taking legal advice, the Local Body Department has prepared a report and sent it to the Chief Minister. Now all eyes are on CM Bhagwant Mann’s decision to take a decision in this regard.
The government is also considering adopting legal options
During the hearing in the court regarding the release of the schedule for the municipal elections, the government argued that the new ward division in some municipal corporations has not been finalized, but the court rejected this demand and decided to hold municipal elections on the basis of the old ward division. In view of this, the government is also considering adopting the legal option to appeal in the Supreme Court.
