1 october 2024 : The Punjab unit of the BJP is experiencing turmoil due to ongoing leadership issues and a lack of grassroots support. Party president Sunil Jakhar, who has resigned from his position, did not attend a meeting called by state affairs in charge Vijay Rupani on Monday.

Reports indicate that the party has struggled to increase its membership, as workers are dissatisfied with the allocation of tickets during the recent Lok Sabha elections, where 11 out of 13 candidates were former Congress members.

Despite Rupani stating at a media briefing that Jakhar had not resigned and was occupied with “party work” in New Delhi, Jakhar’s absence was noted during Rupani’s meeting with the state organization secretaries.

The meeting was attended by Rupani, general secretary (organization) Manthri Srinivaslu, and organization secretaries Daya Singh Sodhi, Jagmohan Raju, and Rakesh Rathore, while the other two organization secretaries, Anil Sarin and Parminder Brar, were absent.

Sources revealed that Jakhar’s absence was discussed, and it was noted that the state unit was unaware of his resignation. It was mentioned that the top three national leaders—Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and party national president JP Nadda—would decide on the presidency if necessary.
