16 september 2024 : Vir Das, who won an International Emmy last year for his comedy special Landing, is set to make history as the first Indian to host the International Emmys. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “After winning the Emmy last year, the team reached out to me about four months later, offering me the hosting role. I had known about it for a while, but the announcement was made recently. It’s an incredible honor to go from being a nominee to a category winner and now hosting. It wasn’t something I expected at all—I didn’t even anticipate being nominated last year. I’m letting my team celebrate; for me, it will truly sink in once the event is over.”

At 45, Das is an experienced performer with a global reputation for his stand-up shows. When it comes to hosting the Emmys, he acknowledges the current climate of sensitivity around jokes. However, he hasn’t started working on his script yet due to his involvement with editing his co-directed film Happy Patel, produced by Aamir Khan. He noted, “Humor is universal, even though sensibilities may vary. If you start worrying about potential backlash, you’ll end up second-guessing everything. People who get into trouble often didn’t foresee it. I plan to stay authentic and let whatever happens, happen.”

Das added, “I don’t even think once about censoring myself on stage. The audience determines the boundaries, not me.” The awards ceremony will take place on November 25.
