17 october 2024 : Former National Commission for Minorities chairman, Tarlochan Singh, has written to the Election Commission of India requesting the rescheduling of Punjab by-elections to avoid a clash with Guru Nanak Dev’s birthday celebrations on November 15. Singh, a former Rajya Sabha MP, highlighted that the by-elections for four Punjab Assembly seats are scheduled for November 13, coinciding with the start of the three-day Guru Nanak Jayanti festivities, including the Akhand Path in Gurdwaras and homes. He urged the Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, to shift the election date to respect the religious sentiments of the people of Punjab.
