14 august 2024 : The trailer for the film Emergency, featuring Kangana Ranaut, was released on Wednesday, providing a glimpse into Indira Gandhi’s ascent to power following the death of her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. The trailer suggests that the narrative focuses on Indira’s tenure as Prime Minister, beginning in 1966, and highlights her decision-making during the 1971 conflict with Pakistan, as well as the Emergency period, often regarded as one of the darkest times in Indian history, characterized by the suppression of fundamental rights and governance through decrees. It seems the film will also address the circumstances surrounding her assassination.
In this portrayal, Kangana embodies Indira as an authoritarian figure, emphasizing the disregard for democratic principles during her leadership. She asserts, “India is Indira and Indira is India,” and “I am the cabinet.” The character of Indira explicitly states that her political ambitions are driven by personal gain rather than national welfare. However, she also expresses her anguish, stating, “What have I received from this country besides hate?” Additionally, the film positions her son, Sanjay Gandhi, as a significant antagonist in Indira’s life.
